What to look for in an Auckland funeral home

Cremation or burial? Not all funeral homes operate their own crematorium. If cremation is your preference, ask whether it's handled in-house or outsourced, and what the turnaround time is for the return of ashes.

Cultural requirements. Auckland is one of the most diverse cities in the world. If your family has specific Māori, Pasifika, Chinese, or other cultural needs — including tangihanga arrangements — confirm that the funeral home has genuine experience with these before committing.

Transparency on pricing. A reputable funeral home will provide a clear written breakdown of costs. Ask specifically what is and isn't included in any package price.

Bringing your own urn. Many families choose to source their own cremation urn rather than purchasing through the funeral home. This is completely normal and gives you more choice, more time, and often a more personal result. Confirm the funeral home is comfortable with this arrangement.
